A few words about us and our restaurant
Kakavia Tavern-Restaurant is located on the idyllic Chiona beach, in Palekastro Sitia, just 50 meters from the sea. It is a family-run business that has been operating since 1964, preserving tradition and authentic Cretan hospitality.
Its story began with the preparation of the traditional fish soup “Kakavia,” from which it took its name. Today, it continues to serve fresh fish, selected daily by local fishermen, as well as exquisite local products. The olive oil used in all dishes is produced by us, ensuring purity and rich flavor. Grilling is done over charcoal with natural wood, following traditional methods that enhance authentic flavors.
Our goal at “Kakavia” is to present the cuisine of our region at its finest. Sitia, the easternmost part of Crete, with its unique climate and geography, produces sought-after ingredients and its own distinctive flavors.
A staple product of our region for four consecutive millennia, the Extra Virgin PDO Olive Oil. Renowned worldwide, Sitia’s olive oil—produced by local farming families and carefully harvested with patience and passion by the local company LASITIA—is the foundation of our recipes. A key ingredient of the Mediterranean diet and essential for creating the delicious, flavorful dishes you are about to enjoy.
At Taverna Kakavia, in addition to exceptional food, you can enjoy your coffee by the sea, relaxing in a peaceful and welcoming environment. Additionally, we offer private parking for the convenience of our guests.
The location of our taverna is particularly privileged, as it is situated near an important archaeological site, offering visitors the opportunity to combine gastronomic delight with historical discovery. At the same time, the area is part of the Sitia Geopark, a place of unique natural beauty and geological significance, ideal for exploration and walks.
